Taking your own veg bags instead of using the stores plastic bags can make a big impact on the amount of plastic you use. Like reusable water bottles, reusable bags are just another good habit you can get into. These bags would also make brilliant Zero Waste packaging for presents! Lisa
Super easy instructions to make a vegetable drawstring bag by Vicky Myers
As plastic free July draws to a close it’s time for a moment of reflection. Personally one of my bad habit’s is my fizzy drink consumption which generates at least three two litre plastic bottles a week. I am delighted to have reduced to only one, but need to keep it up!
Lots of simple changes can make such a difference. Storage is easy to think about and change. Taking bags with you to the shop/farmers market means you are not going to get caught out. It is super easy to make simple drawstring bags out of former T towels, perfect for storing vegetables.
Vegetable Drawstring Bags
This tutorial makes a bag 15 by 8”. Simply change the measurements to make different size bags.
You will need:-
- T Towel
- Sewing Tape
- Cord
- Sewing machine
- Iron
- Scissors
- Glue stick
- Safety Pin
To make:
Trim the T Towel to measure 25 by 9.5″. Fold over the raw edge twice and press. Stitch along the folded seam to encase the raw edges.
Fold the fabric in half, right sides together. Pin along one short edge and long seam. Stitch along these seams to create a simple bag. Turn right side out.
Cut two lengths of sewing tape 8 “, fold in raw edges and glue with glue stick.
Once dry place parallel to the top of the bag, an inch down, right side facing. Stitch along the long edges, leaving the short sides open ready for the cord.
Thread the cord through all round and tie (pinning a safety pin to the cord makes all the difference to pushing the cord through). Starting from the opposite side of the bag thread cord through again, tying with a knot.
The vegetable drawstring bags are super easy to make, once you have the knack you will be making three an hour. They make perfect gifts.
If you love sewing why not make a tote bag from T Towels? This tutorial shares a ten minute tote bag or a slightly more detailed lined with slip pocket tote.
