This pop up restaurant prevents food waste
You wouldn’t know from the menus that this is a supper club with a difference, the food is all donated by local supermarkets and would have been thrown away otherwise.
On Mondays Rachel, John and Rebecca collect the food which can be anything from profiteroles to lettuce. They have no idea what they are getting! On Tuesdays Rachel plans the menu and posts it in the Facebook group. Last week was Tapas, this week it was spag bol. They have to think pretty fast to come up with meal ideas and cook in advance if there is a glut of something that might go off.
Rachel searches for recipes that use the ingredients she has been given and she is very creative about it. Banana and carrot curry was very popular and they have experimented with vegan chocolate avocado mousse and cashew nut mayo.
There is nothing wrong with the food that M&S, Lidl and Aldi donate, they have just decided it is not good enough to sell. Like the wonderful £1.50 veg boxes that you can find in Lidl if you are lucky, the veg is not in perfect condition but it is still perfectly usable and very delicious too. Sometimes flowers are donated too and Rachel uses them in flower arranging sessions with elders. They decorated a local pub who did a fundraiser for them and even used charity shop vases!
I’m writing this with a tummy full of good home cooked food thanks to the Super Supper Club. This evening was busy with people from all over the world sharing tables, chatting and listening to music while they ate.
When, where and how much….
The Super Supper Club is open to all and there is a suggested donation of £3 (which pays for room hire and extra ingredients).
If you want to volunteer to cook turn up at 5pm, otherwise food is served at 7pm.
